Why I Light The Candle

SWEATER WEATHER, WOODEN WICKS, RITUALS THAT ARE HOME

By Lisa R. Conner

There is a certain kind of comfort that only arrives this time of year.

The air shifts. Mornings ask for slippers. Evenings ask for blankets. The light changes. My nervous system seems to know before I do that it is time to come inside a little more fully.

This is the season when I reach for candles.

Not just because they smell beautiful, though they do.

Not just because they make a room feel prettier, though they do that too.

I light them because they help me arrive.

The scrape of the match.
The first flicker.
The soft glow against amber glass.
And especially the gentle crackle of a wooden wick.

That sound gets me every time.

It feels like a tiny campfire in the room. Like the emotional equivalent of pulling on a sweater, wrapping both hands around a warm mug, and letting your shoulders finally drop. The crackle slows me down. It reminds me that not every moment has to be rushed. Some moments are meant to be entered.

That’s what candlelight has become for me: a threshold.

A signal.

We’re beginning now.
You can exhale now.
Come closer.
Stay here long enough to feel your own life.

I think that’s why fragrance matters so much to me. Scent reaches us before language does. Smoke, wood, citrus, lavender, sage — they all carry something emotional with them. A memory. A mood. A season. A part of ourselves.

One scent can take you back years.

Another can help you return to the present.

That became the heart behind my candle collection.

I didn’t want to create candles named after fragrance alone. I wanted them to reflect the inner landscapes we live in and move through — Curiosity, Courage, Compassion, Nostalgia, Calm, Creativity, Connection — and now in production, Confidence.

Each one holds more than a blend. Each one holds an experience.

Curiosity feels like wonder.
Nostalgia feels like remembering.
Compassion feels like tenderness.
Courage feels like steadying yourself before the leap.
Creativity feels alive and uplifting.
Calm feels like the exhale.
Connection feels like warmth shared.

These are not just candles to me.

They are companions.

They are rituals in scent form.

They are little invitations to become more intentional about how I move through a day, a season, a life.

And maybe that’s why I love them so much this time of year.

When the days get shorter, I feel the need for small, glowing, flickering lights.
For warmth.
For beauty.
For reminders.

The wooden wick crackles.
The fragrance begins to rise.
The room softens.
And something in me remembers my truth.

That’s the real ritual.

Not perfection.
Not performance.
Just presence.

A candle beside the bed.
A candle near the journal.
A candle on the desk while I work.
A candle glowing near a warm drink while I sit quietly and listen for myself again.

I think we underestimate how much these tiny rituals shape us.

Today’s candlelight becomes tomorrow’s memory.

Today’s quiet becomes tomorrow’s nostalgia.

What feels ordinary now — the glow, the crackle, the fragrance, the comfort — may someday be the very thing we ache to remember.

That is why I light the candle.

To mark the moment.
To honor the season.
To warm the room.
To draw myself back in.

To remember that even an ordinary moment can become sacred if I am present enough to notice it.

And in a world that moves fast and asks so much, I find that deeply comforting.

Especially in sweater weather.

Living in curiosity,

Lisa
